Dr. Simon Nganga: Urban Youth Identity and (Dis)alignment in Churchhill Raw Comedy Shows in Kenya
Zeit: 16 Uhr (c.t.)
S 138 (NW III)
The question of urban youth identity, particularly its association with
language practices or sociolects, has been investigated. The general
trend has been to treat young people as a homogenous whole and to
analyze identity as a relatively static notion that is independent of
language. Approaching identity as a process that emerges through
temporary roles and orientations assumed by participants and,
therefore, expanding its scope to include mixed identities, this project
investigates the verbal (and non-verbal) communicative means that
young people use to indicate the relevance of local and global
perspectives of ethnicity, multilingualism, gender, religion, socioeconomic
status and age in a stand-up comedy show, Churchhill Raw.
By adopting a discourse-level perspective to the empirical data from
Churchill Raw, the current project, therefore, introduces a critical
dimension to the question of language and urban youth identities, and
it, therefore, contributes to discussions on how, using (verbal and nonverbal)
communicative means, young people construct (and even resist)
multiple identities in Nairobi and in other cities in Africa.
